Van hits gas meter causing house fire in Bel Air

Officials say BGE has shut off the gas line. The fire has been put out.

Update 10:33pm:

Authorities have confirmed a van hit a gas meter, causing the house fire.

The driver of the van has been identified but fled the scene. Harford County police are trying to locate the driver.

The reason why the driver crashed into the home is unknown. The homeowner wasn't home at the time of the fire.

Everyone in the neighborhood who initially evacuated is back in their homes.

One of the owner's dogs died as a result of the fire. The other is under the care of emergency vet services.

A fire caused massive damage to a home in Bel Air Wednesday night, according to the Harford County Fire Department.

Authorities say the source of the fire was a natural gas line.

From pictures taken at the scene by Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, the home seems to be a mere shell of itself.

Neighbors evacuated their homes as the fire spread. No injuries have been reported.
