Apr 27, 2023Concrete truck hits gas meter, starting fire in southwest Lubbock
No injuries were reported after a truck rammed a gas meter, leading to a fire Monday morning in southwest Lubbock.
Lubbock Fire Rescue received a 911 call about 8:15 a.m. Monday reporting a concrete truck struck a gas meter in an alley in the 6000 block of 77th Street, the department said in a series of social media posts.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the gas meter and the truck on fire. A nearby electrical box, shed and fence were also engulfed in flames, LFR said, threatening a nearby home.
The first engine on scene requested additional units to respond to the fire. Three more engines, one truck and two battalion chiefs were dispatched, and the crews were able to keep the fire from spreading, LFR said.
The driver exited the truck without injury, and crews from Atmos Energy and Lubbock Power & Light isolated the gas and electrical lines under the truck.
The concrete truck was removed from the alley just after 3 p.m., and crews continued work to repair the utilities Monday afternoon.
