Cleveland Cliffs CEO discusses potentially reviving tin mill with transformer manufacturer

Oct 15, 2024Oct 15, 2024

Just 3 days after the idling of the Cleveland Cliffs Plant in Weirton, there are now new talks into the plant’s future.

Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves announced he’s in talks with transformer manufacturer ERMCO to potentially start back up the recently idled tin mill facility to make transformers.

Goncalves remains positive and stated Cliffs intentions during an investor relations call.

"We want to put a new factory in Weirton, West Virginia, using our workforce there to produce transformers," he said.

Cliffs currently has a transformer-grade steel facility in Butler, Pa., nd there aren’t many others in the country.

"Made in the USA transformers, and hopefully with union workers,” Goncalves said. “That's what we're working, on and we believe we're going to be successful."

USW 2911 President Mark Glyptis says the announcement is a very positive step for the workforce in Weirton, especially as it could bring 800-1,000 jobs back.

"It’s a sizeable investment,” Glyptis said. “There will be negotiations; I want to emphasize, it’s in its infancy. There isn’t anything guaranteed at this point. But potentially fantastic news."

And while the product wouldn’t be tin plate, it would be an easy transition for many of those workers given their manufacturing experience, which is what attracted the potential investor.

"Needing 1,000 people is attractive,” Glyptis said. “These people have worked in manufacturing and it’s exciting. It could be great not only for our employees, but the community and the state as well."

He's even had many previous workers at the tin mill who just transferred to other Cliffs plants call him up and ask when they can come back to Weirton.

They would be able to, as Cliffs negotiated a deal that workers have a 5-year period to come back and work in Weirton.

Glytpis says the plant is still being cleaned in order to restart production of some sort, but before discussions could continue, they must secure financing first.
